Class Schedule:

Yin Yoga for Splits -

Mondays at 6:30-7:30 pm

Don't be scared of this name. This is a stretching and strengthening class that will open up your walking and help you feel refreshed at the end of it. This class opens with some strengthening moves but most of the practice is sitting or lying and doing bends to open up the front of the pelvis and inside of the thighs to keep our legs moving freely so we can move better in our everyday lives. These practices have measurable benefits for your balance as well as your central nervous system. They help you feel calmer, more confident, and able to handle pain better.  (Most people are flexible enough to do splits right now but our central nervous system does not allow it. It goes into alarm mode and stiffens us up, telling us it's so we don't hurt ourselves. By relaxing into a place, or just before it, and staying there, we allow our muscles to relax which allows our central nervous system to begin to feel reassured this is a safe place so you can relax more and that makes you open up more.) There are so many benefits in working toward splits, even if you never do a full split. Doing a split is not even the goal. Becoming strong and flexible enough to become comfortable in some of these poses, that is our goal. Releasing our fascia that's bound and limiting our range of motion is a goal. Learning to relax when we are uncomfortable, that is a goal. To be still, to breathe, and to explore inwardly, inside our bodies, to learn ourselves from the inside out, that's our goal. Come explore.

Morning Yin Yoga -

Tuesday Mornings at 10:30-11:30 am

This is a gentle morning opening and centering practice. We'll elongate scrunched up bodies and wake up our backs and behinds. We'll open our shoulders and release pressure around the neck. We'll center and affirm and start our day on an intentional foot. In this practice we sit or lie and hold gentle poses for :30 seconds to 3 minutes. We breathe and we relax and we let tension go! This practice also allows gentle elongation at our connective areas which allows us to work through atrophy and increase our range of motion and move better throughout the day.

Chair Practice -

Tuesday evenings at 6:30-7:30 pm

This is a fun strengthening and stretching program using one of the sturdy wooden chairs in the chapel. We'll be doing some conscious walking, some stretches, some gentle exercises, and some chair dance moves that make us stronger and flexier. It's a fun and creative way to get strong and have a good stretch and these moves are things you can do with a chair in your own home to relax and release your whole back or just have some fun. It's best to wear clothes like yoga pants or sweatpants that slide a little so we can easily slide on our chairs. Wearing good socks will also make it easier to slide your feet on the ground. Come play. You'll be surprised how fun it is.  .

Yin Yoga for End of Day -

Wednesdays at 6:30-7:30 pm

I want to offer people who can only come at night an opportunity to get in a yin yoga practice if they can. It really is life changing because of its effects on the central nervous system but it also relaxes and opens you up so you feel calm and juicy for the rest of your evening and into your sleep. Most people sleep much easier and

better after a yin yoga practice and since sleep is when most our healing happens, this practice also facilitates healing.

The history of drumming is long and varied, with drums appearing in many ancient cultures and serving a variety of purposes:
Spiritual ceremonies: Drums were used in rituals to connect with the divine and infuse spiritual energy.
Communal gatherings: Drums were used to foster a sense of belonging and solidarity among tribe members.
Communication: Drums were used to convey messages and coordinate activities within and between communities.

All of these are needed today as mush as there were needed in the past.

Come join Kelly Rye in Saint Anne's Chapel at Oak Grove Retreat for a magical journey with watercolor!

“Magical” is definitely the right word for watercolor. It almost seems like magic how the paint spreads across the page and takes on a life of its own. Which is the perfect medium for this “learn through play” art series at Oak Grove.

Kelly Rye will be leading a 3 class series, taking you on a transformational journey through all the wonders of watercolor. This course will teach you how to master basic techniques that will give you control over the painting process, while allowing room for growth and “happy accidents”!  In these guided workshops you will learn the tips and tricks of the trade, while also learning to find your own creative style and flow.

Topics Covered: color palettes, brush control, blending colors on paper, effects/techniques, wet vs dry paper, ombré gradient washes, how to fix mistakes, and tons more!  We will start this series with the basics, getting comfortable with the medium and getting the feel of the brush, mixing paint, etc. Working our way up to more advanced techniques to help you master your painting skills!

Being in the art world for 25+yrs, Kelly knows how challenging it can be to get out of our comfort zones and express yourself freely. Understanding how some can feel anxious, overwhelmed, and not “good enough”. In Kellys’ classes she strives to help overcome those fears and anxieties, in a friendly, relaxed, playful, judgment free, and creative environment.

This course is perfect for beginners as it teaches watercolor fundamentals but doesn’t overload you with information. By the end of the course, you will have all the skills needed to harness the magic of watercolor to create a beautiful masterpiece. While  picking up many useful techniques along the way that can be used every time you paint!

Who is this course for?

  • Anyone who wants to learn to paint with watercolors

  • Anyone who has the gear, but doesnt know where to start

  • Anyone who has tried before but got lost in the process

  • Anyone who might feel intimidated by creating art

  • Anyone who feels not “good enough”

  • Anyone who wishes to explore their creative side

  • Anyone who wishes to reduce stress levels and anxiety

Class mostly suitable for adults.

Why? Because as adults we collect limiting beliefs about what we can and can't do. Painting might be one of them? So join us and overcome your fears in this playful and light hearted series!

A Profound Sunday Event

January 26th at 2:00pm

Somewhere between the drum circle and a sound bath exists a magical place many of us call RHYTHM CHURCH.  The term was coined by Arthur Hull, midwife of the modern drum circle; teacher and mentor to master facilitators across the globe.  The idea is that the occasion is all about spirit and has nothing to do with religion.  It's a musical expression of connection and love.  How appropriate that we're hosting this happening in Saint Anne's Chapel!  We've done this at Oak Grove Retreat Center a time or two before, and each time it's been amazing.  Here's why:

In the drum circle we all play full-till boogie.  In a sound bath we chill and soak up the good vibrations.  The love child of these two is RHYTHM CHURCH -- an occasion focused on listening, intention, and softer expressions of our inner spirit.  Here we use the angelic sound of chimes supported by smaller, carefully curated shaker and wood sounds that create a clock suspending time as we make this supernatural music together.  We layer this soundtrack with ancient vibrations from the Native American flute, Aboriginal didgeridoo, and Himalayan singing bowls.  We then top it with voices toning and ohming and filling the rafters with a deep connection between our inner selves and the outer world.

Unlike the drum circle, we're focused on soft and peaceful sounds.  Unlike a sound bath, we're actively making music together rather than merely absorbing a soundscape.  And we're doing this with rare and unusual chimes that will ring in this new year through melodies made in the moment.   Join us in RHYTHM CHURCH, where our old friend and teacher GREG WHITT of DRUM FOR CHANGE will share a sermon never heard before and never to be heard again, one without words, one that you help compose under the trees, against near-hundred year old bricks, behind the beautiful stained glass of Saint Anne's at Oak Grove.

Greg Whitt is an in-demand teaching artist, team builder, storyteller, and wellness facilitator.  He's one of Raleigh's Arts Commissioners, founder of the Raleigh Drum Circle, and owner of Drum for Change.  He's joined by his darling bride Annelies Gentile, a visual artist, movement facilitator, and professional coach at Conduit for Change.
